I was fortunate to get to see The Rolling Stones in Denver last week and astonished to see Mick Jagger perform just like he did 20, 30 or 40 years ago. I’ve seen them perform before, both times in Florida, in 1975 and around 1989 and couldn’t believe that his moves, which he is famous for, don’t seem to have changed. And he will be 81 in July!
He was all over the stage for at least two hours and moved like someone still in his twenties. I had to find out what his workout regimen is and what the guy eats.
Here’s a look at what I found:
Intense Cardio Workouts
Mick Jagger incorporates a variety of cardiovascular exercises into his fitness routine. Running, cycling, and swimming are key components that help him maintain high endurance levels. He works out 3 hours a day, 6 days a week and, aside from cardio, includes ballet, weight training, and Pilates. And there’s two dance rehearsals a week. Basically, he works out like an athlete.
Strength Training
Strength training is another fundamental element of Jagger’s fitness regimen. He focuses on exercises that build muscle and maintain strength, which is essential for overall health and longevity. Weightlifting, bodyweight exercises, and resistance training help him stay strong and agile, supporting his physically demanding performances.
Flexibility and Balance Exercises
Flexibility and balance are vital for all of us and especially for Jagger’s energetic and often acrobatic stage moves. Yoga is a significant part of his routine, helping him maintain flexibility, improve balance, and prevent injuries. Practicing yoga also aids in relaxation and mental clarity and supports his overall well-being.
Healthy, Balanced Diet
Jagger’s diet is disciplined and focused on providing his body with the necessary nutrients. He eats a diet rich in organic fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains. Avoiding processed foods and refined sugars helps him maintain steady energy levels and overall health. Hydration is also key; Jagger drinks plenty of water throughout the day to stay hydrated and energized.
Mind-Body Wellness
Beyond physical fitness, he also tends to his mental and emotional well-being. Meditation and mindfulness practices help him manage stress and maintain mental clarity, helping support his high-energy lifestyle and touring schedule.
Active Lifestyle
Jagger’s commitment to fitness extends beyond structured workouts. He leads an active lifestyle, hiking and playing cricket being two of his favorite activities.
Mick Jagger’s approach to staying in shape is multifaceted, combining intense workouts, a balanced diet, professional guidance, and a focus on mental well-being. Obviously, he would have access to the best food, personal chefs, trainers and other accoutrements many of us don’t experience. He also credits his wellbeing in part to good genes. His father was a fitness instructor who lived to the age of 93! The thing that impressed me, though, is his dedication to maintaining his health and fitness and to the basics that we all have access to. We all can commit ourselves to a healthy lifestyle, exercising regularly, eating fresh, whole foods and finding healthy ways to manage our stress. Our lives may not require the energy and stamina of someone like Mick Jagger but the basics of health and wellbeing are the same. And that, I think, is inspiring.
