With the Holidays here, many of us find ourselves wandering store aisles or clicking through endless online gift guides, searching for the “perfect” present. Yet the truth is the most cherished moments rarely come wrapped in paper. They come from shared laughter and connection, new adventures, and memories that last. This year, consider giving experiences instead of gifts—and discover how much richer the season can feel.
Experiences offer something that material items rarely can: emotional resonance. Whether it’s a cooking class, a weekend away, a spa day, a live performance, or even a coaching session, experiences invite presence and engagement. They encourage us to step away from the daily grind and into something that enriches, delights, or expands us. In a world where most people already have too much stuff—and too little time—an experience can be an invitation to be present, to slow down.
Experience-based gifts also strengthen our relationships. When you share an activity with someone, you’re not only creating a memory together—you’re strengthening your bond with that person. When our son was still in high school, I gave him a surprise gift of two tickets to a concert of his favorite band which was coming to town. It turned out that I was the one who was surprised when he asked if I wanted to go with him. That experience still touches me today.
Even solo experiences, like a massage or personal coaching package, signal care and thoughtfulness in a way generic gifts simply can’t.
And perhaps most importantly, giving experiences aligns with what many of us really want during the holidays: meaning. Not more clutter, not more stuff, but more moments that feel authentic. Instead of another sweater or gadget, imagine gifting someone a chance to learn, explore, recharge, or reconnect with themselves.
This holiday season, try shifting the focus from things to experiences. Because long after the wrapping paper is gone, what people remember most is not what they received—but how they felt.
