I have always loved fall. Summer is winding down, routines return, schedules become more structured, and there is a new sense of focus for a lot of us. Vacations are over, school or work is starting back up, and there is a sense of freshness in the air.
For many of us, January represents a new start. We make resolutions, set ambitious goals, and promise ourselves that this will be the year we finally create the life we want.
Maybe you’ve heard this phrase being kicked around more recently: “September is the new January.” I have here and there, and I thought it might be fun to explore the idea a bit more.
There is something about September that naturally invites a reset. Summer winds down, routines return, schedules become more structured, and there is a new sense of focus for a lot of us. Rather than waiting for January to make changes, September can be an opportunity to pause, reflect, and think about what you would like to come next. And it doesn’t have to mean huge changes, not at all.
Instead of asking, “What should I accomplish before the end of the year?” try asking:
What do I want more of in my life?
What is no longer serving me?
Where could I make a small but meaningful change?
Maybe September is a good time to recommit to your health. Perhaps you want to walk more, improve your sleep, spend less time on your devices, or be more intentional about what you eat. Or maybe your reset is less tangible. You might want to create healthier boundaries, reconnect with people you care about, pursue something you’ve been putting off, or simply make more room for the things that bring you energy and meaning.
And unlike the all-or-nothing resolutions we often make in January, a September reset can be about refinement rather than reinvention. Choose one or two areas that deserve your attention. Start small. Focus on consistency rather than perfection and give yourself permission to adjust as you go. There are still four months left in the year—plenty of time to create meaningful change.
So as September begins you can think of it as a time to reset, pause, reassess and refocus. And move forward with intention.
You don’t need to wait for January – your fresh start can begin now.
Today’s Takeaway – Take some time to reflect on your year. What’s working well? What might need to change? Is there something you need to let go of? Meaningful progress always starts with clarity. Think about what’s most important to you in this season and make that your starting point.
